Android 10 makes the 'Sharesheet' faster: here's how

Android x makes the 'Sharesheet' faster: here's how

Google says the Android x Sharesheet fully loads in 30ms for 50 percent of users, compared to 9 percent in Android 9

Android 10 Sharesheet

Android'south 'Sharesheet,' a UI tool that helps users share items with contacts and apps, underwent some changes in Android 10 that should make information technology much faster.

Google has been working to improve the Sharesheet for some time now after information technology became one of the worst parts of the Android experience. The carte du jour became quite slow afterward Google tried to make it more contextual. Often, Sharesheet would update moments earlier a user fabricated a selection, refreshing the entire listing and moving items around.

In a talk at the 2019 Android Dev Summit, product manager Atur Tsurkan detailed some of the changes Google made to the Sharesheet in Android 10 to remedy these bug.

First, the team simplified the interface. The modify makes it clear what you're sharing and provides easy admission to the 'copy' button.

Below that, users volition find four contacts to share to. Sharesheet now preloads these suggested contacts based on previous behaviour. Information technology also uses a new Sharing Shortcuts API, which improves the speed.

Google says that in its testing, fifty percent of Android 10 users will see a fully loaded Sharesheet within 30ms of tapping share. On Android ix, merely 9 per centum of users would see a fully loaded Sharesheet. Past 100ms, all Android 10 users volition see a fully loaded Sharesheet compared to just fifty percent in Android 9.

On meridian of this, Google is encouraging developers to use a new API for people shortcuts (straight links to specific contacts in certain apps).

Below the four people shortcuts are 4 app share targets, and below that is an alphabetical list of all other possible share targets. Google recently adapted this system to prevent developers from trying to game it and get their app college on the listing.

While improving the Sharesheet is practiced, Google has a new problem to tackle: getting devs to utilize information technology. Because of the bug with Sharesheet in Android eight and 9, devs began building custom versions into their apps — including several Google apps, like Photos, YouTube and News. Hopefully Google tin can make the Sharesheet consistent across its apps and lead devs to use the proper Sharesheet themselves.
